Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
