Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
