Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show nears, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
