The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the ability to challenge particular rulings from the official, following the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
